BRUTAL WEATHER ACCOMPANIES KNIK SLED DOG RACE MUSHERS AND DOG TEAMS ON THEIR 100 AND 200 MILE JOURNEYS OVER NEW YEAR’S WEEKEND
Ferocious hurricane-force winds and chilly temperatures ushered in the 2022 New Year for the mushers and dog teams competing in the 200 and 100 mile Knik sled dog races on January 1st and 2nd.
Sixteen 200 teams and fifteen 100 teams took off from Knik Lake as winds howled (louder than animated sled dogs) through the Mat-Su Valley for 3 days, winds that resulted in widespread destruction and debris and an emergency declaration for the borough. Mushers and dog teams, however, forged ahead on the trail, maneuvering their way around downed trees, driving through whiteout conditions, fighting to stay upright as wind gusts sabotaged forward motion, and encountering very significant overflow...

TODAY’S KNIK IDITAROD TRAILBLAZERS ARE FOCUSED ON BUILDING THE IDITAROD TRAIL OF TOMORROW
A significant stretch of the historic Iditarod Trail in Knik, Alaska is accessible to trail users only during the frozen months due to marshes and wetlands that dominate the summer terrain.
It always bothered Iditarod musher and lifelong Knik resident Ray Redington Jr. that a trail so historic and beautiful could only be used for five months out of twelve. Redington pondered, “How could the Knik Iditarod Trail become an all-seasons trail and be enjoyed by more people?”
Rather than let the question linger, Redington followed in the visionary footsteps of his grandfather and Iditarod founder Joe Redington Sr.; he set out to solve that question....
